[Punk] [James Stark] [Crime]. Crime Appearing One Nite Only at the Stud. [San Francisco]: [1977]. 8 1/2 x 11”, offset printed on white card stock.

The rare poster for what was supposed to be Crime’s second gig, at San Francisco gay bar Stud. The starkly designed poster, which was designed by James Stark (sorry), features a solemn photograph of Hitler, gazing outward at the viewer. Because of the poster, the club owner cancelled the show. According to rumor, concert promoter Bill Graham refused to ever book the band because of the poster. Stark designed a number of Crime’s posters, and was the main architect of the visual aspect of the band. A landmark punk flyer, and a perfect example of a certain tendency in punk art of the late 70’s and early 80’s to offer an ambiguous image without comment; an essential part of the work is the response engendered in the viewer.
